High-Intensity Discharge (HID) Lamp A general term for mercury, metal halide and high-pressure sodium lamps.

HID lamps contain compact arc tubes which enclose various gases and metal salts operating at relatively high pressures and temperatures

When current is generated the two leads ark creating a super brilliant light source with UV characteristics and wave lengths that can illuminate fluorescent colors. This burst of light is perfect for lighting systems and special effect lighting. The HID bulbs also have different color temperature that cast the light in different hues. Either towards reddish bright white or toward bluish bright white depending on the manufacture and or specifications.

HID bulbs also benefit from longer than normal lamp life 2000-5000 hours typically making it more maintenance free and longer times before the lamp needs to be replaced.
